Safety
How to stay safe when OpenMap helps you meet people, view homes and get out and about.
Version 1.0 · Last updated 19 October 2026
The short version
- OpenMap isn’t an emergency service. In an emergency, call 999.
- Meet people in public first, and tell someone where you’re going.
- Never pay rent or a deposit before you’ve viewed and checked the landlord.
- On Adventures, watch for traffic and follow local rules. You take part at your own risk.
Emergencies
OpenMap, its agent and the receptionists businesses use are not emergency services and can’t call for help for you. If anyone is in danger, seriously ill or injured, call 999 (or 112). For urgent medical help that isn’t an emergency, call NHS 111. If you smell gas, call 0800 111 999.
Meeting people
- For a first meeting with someone from OpenMap, meet somewhere public and tell a friend where you’ll be.
- When a tradesperson comes to your home, check who they are, and don’t let anyone in you aren’t expecting.
- Keep payments and messages in the app where you can, and never share passwords or one-time codes.
- If something feels wrong, leave, and report it to us.
Rentals and viewings
- OpenMap is an advertising platform, not a letting agent. We don’t check landlords or properties.
- Never pay rent, a deposit or a holding deposit before you’ve viewed the property and checked the landlord. OpenMap never asks you to pay rent or deposits.
- Take someone with you to a viewing, or tell a friend where you’re going.
- Check the landlord’s right to let, the deposit protection scheme and the tenancy before you sign.
Adventures and the outdoors
- Adventures are made by other people. We don’t check that every place is safe, open or accessible, and conditions change.
- Watch for traffic, stay off private land, roads, railways and water, and follow signs and local rules. Never use your phone while crossing a road.
- Dress for the weather, and tell someone where you’re going.
- You take part at your own risk. Children should be with an adult.
Reporting a concern
Use Report in the app, or see the Community Guidelines. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999 first.
