Use OpenMap in ChatGPT and Claude
Add OpenMap to the assistant you already use. Ask it to find local services and UK companies, and it answers with OpenMap links you can open and check.
1. Copy the server address
This is the address you paste into ChatGPT or Claude. There’s no account, password or key to set up.
2. Add it to ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Apps & Connectors (called Connectors on some plans).
- Under Advanced settings, turn on Developer mode. Your plan and workspace settings decide whether you see this.
- Choose Create. Name it OpenMap, paste the server address, and set authentication to No authentication.
- Confirm you trust the connector, then create it.
- In a new chat, pick OpenMap from the tools menu (the + button) and ask, for example: “Find a plumber in Barnet on OpenMap”.
3. Or add it to Claude
- In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector. Name it OpenMap and paste the server address. Leave the advanced (OAuth) settings empty.
- Choose Add. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner may need to add it first in the organisation’s settings.
- In a chat, open the tools menu below the message box, switch OpenMap on and ask, for example: “Which companies do tree surgery near EN5?”
What OpenMap can do there
It can
- Search services published on OpenMap by need, area and trade (up to 10).
- Show a listing’s details: price basis, what’s included and cancellation terms.
- Search active UK companies from Companies House, and show a company’s public facts.
- Give an “ask this business” link, with a question ready, for you to open and send.
It can’t
- Book, pay, send messages or contact anyone for you.
- See your OpenMap account, chats or saved things.
- Give private personal details, such as contact details, home addresses or company officers. A listing shows the provider’s name as they publish it.
- Give legal, medical or financial advice, or arrange or compare insurance, credit, mortgages or energy deals.
Results are what businesses publish and what Companies House records. They aren’t advice, reviews or recommendations: check details with the business before you rely on them.
Privacy
- ChatGPT or Claude sends OpenMap only the search words it chooses, such as “plumber” and “Barnet”. OpenMap doesn’t see your chat or know who you are.
- We don’t keep those searches. To stop overuse, we count requests per connection for a minute at a time, and tool calls per network for a day, with a scrambled code made from the network address and the date. The address itself isn’t kept, the code changes every day, and the counts are deleted within two days.
- Your chat is covered by ChatGPT’s or Claude’s own privacy terms. See our privacy overview for OpenMap.
Limits
The limits, in detail
Each connection can send up to 120 requests a minute. ChatGPT and Claude connect from addresses that many people share, so there’s no daily limit for each connection. Each network (a block of nearby addresses) can make up to 25,000 tool calls a day, so no one network can use up the day for everyone, and there’s a daily limit of 100,000 tool calls (searches and look-ups) for everyone together. When a limit is reached, the assistant is told in plain words and when to try again: the per-minute limit clears within a minute, and the daily limit resets at midnight UTC (01:00 UK time in summer). Search on OpenMap or the company directory any time.
For developers
How the server works
The server speaks the Model Context Protocol over Streamable HTTP. It is stateless: send JSON-RPC with POST; GET and DELETE answer 405. It needs no sign-in and allows browser clients (CORS). Tools: search_services, get_service, search_companies and get_company, and one prompt, find_local_help. There’s a plain summary at /llms.txt.
For one business
Each business page has a connect page with its own addresses.
